Skin cancer is not uncommon in the eyelid areas. It is important to stay diligent about any new skin growths. In order to treat eyelid cancer, growths will need to be excised, and the surrounding eyelid area reconstructed to maintain eyelid function and aesthetics.

Symptoms of Eyelid Cancer

Cancer of the eyelids and the surrounding areas are not uncommon. Most common malignant tumors include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Tumors may present as eyelid nodules or bumps, pigmented growths, loss of eyelashes, or asymmetric eyelid appearance. Not infrequently, tumors are misdiagnosed as persistent styes or chalazia. Timely diagnosis and correct treatment are crucial for the best long-term outcome as the eyelids are crucial in facial aesthetics and are critical for the health of the eye and vision.

How to Diagnose Eyelid Cancer

If a suspicious growth is present, an in-office biopsy is often done to establish the diagnosis, as malignant lesions may mimic benign ones and vice versa.

When necessary, Dr. Levin collaborates with experienced local dermatologists to ensure the best possible results are achieved.

How to Treat Eyelid Cancer

Complete excision is necessary to ensure the lowest chance of recurrence. Reconstruction of the defect following tumor excision can be straightforward or highly challenging. The importance of specialized training in this area cannot be understated, as a poor result can affect not only appearance but also cause pain, discomfort, infection, and vision loss.

The ultimate outcome of the procedure will be to help shape the area to closely resemble what it looked like before cancer while protecting your vision and maintaining proper function.

Eyelid Cancer Reconstruction Recovery

After your surgery, there will be some recovery. The amount of time you will have to stay home and recovery will vary depending on the extent of your procedure.
