Injectable fillers are now the most common way patients are adding volume to their lips. By using fillers, patients are able to add volume, improve proportion and symmetry, reshape, and enhance their lips. If you’re interested in natural-looking lip enhancement in Fairfield County, CT, contact Dr. Flora Levin today.

What Are Fillers Made With?

There are a variety of fillers on the market today, but the most commonly used ones and those appropriate for lip enhancement, are made from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in the body. Native hyaluronic acid is metabolized and degraded in about 48 hours, so a modification is needed to make the injectable form longer-lasting. The acid is made up of chains that are crosslinked with proteins to make it more stable and prolong longevity.

Hyaluronic acid fillers have a gel-like consistency but come in different forms that vary in thickness and rigidity. Knowledge of specific filler characteristics is important to achieve predictable and satisfactory results for any particular part of the face.   Over time, it is safely broken down by the body, which is why the results are only temporary.

Before & After Dermal Fillers

What Can Fillers Achieve for the Lips?

Lips enhancement with fillers requires great technical skill along with artistic acumen. Lips should always be viewed as part of the whole face to create the most harmonious results. Dr. Levin’s lip enhancement results look natural, without letting anyone else know that something was done. The unsightly ducky lip appearance is created by injections directly into the border of the lips (vermillion border) projecting the lips outward. This is avoided as Dr. Levin makes use of the natural anatomy of the lips, rather than trying to create something new and unnatural.

Gently and subtly augmenting the naturally occurring pillows of the lips, followed by gentle injections under the vermillion border to increase vertical height creates a beautiful result, enhancing the patient’s own features. Beautiful and natural results can be achieved in young patients who desire more volume or improved proportions and symmetry. In an older lip, the tissue support is weakened and the injector must be even more careful to avoid filler migration and unnatural results.

What Filler Product Does Dr. Levin Use?

Some of the most common injectables used for lip fillers are from the Juvederm and Restylane family of products. RHA 2 is the newest FDA-approved dermal filler that can also be used for lip treatment. Each product has several variations, and Dr. Levin will choose the correct one based on your unique needs.

Recovery After Lip Enhancement

After your lip enhancement, you will be able to return home, or even to work, right away. There are a few things to avoid after treatment, such as heat, exercise, and touching or massaging the area. This helps the product stay in its intended position. You may experience some bruising, discomfort, or redness in the area.

The most common side effect is swelling. The typical recovery course after lip treatment is swelling that worsens a few hours after the procedure and lasts 3-5 days, diminishing over time. The most common side effect is swelling, which can be reduced through the use of ice packs.

All of these side effects will subside within a few days. There may be some slight bleeding at the injection site immediately following treatment, which should stop very shortly after.

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?

The length of time a filler lasts will vary from person to person. On average, lip filler will last between six and 12 months, although it could be more or less than that. You can also have repeat treatments to maintain your results or add more volume if necessary.
