What is Restylane®?

Restylane® is a hyaluronic acid filler used to augment and replace lost volume in the face. There are a few different formulations of Restylane, including Restylane®,  Restylane® Lyft, Restylane® Refyne and Defyne, Restylane® Silk, Restylane® Kysse, and the newest, Restylane® Contour. All formulations are FDA-approved, serve specific needs, and have unique indications.

Achieving a Natural Look

The key to achieving a natural look with fillers is to address the underlying causes of the wrinkles, folds, hollows, and shadows and treat the face uniformly, not just filling one area. Lifting the cheek area results in improvement of nasolabial folds and restores the youthful Ogee curve. Unfortunately, too often, one sees people with overfilled cheeks that look unnatural.

This can be easily avoided by treatment strategies that conservatively address the cheeks and as part of a global treatment that addresses the upper and the lower face for a balanced, natural look. Having fillers with various characteristics in her repertoire allows Dr. Levin to achieve results that look youthful and beautiful, but not like you had work done.

What Is the Best Age to Get Dermal Fillers?

Chronological age is one factor that Dr. Levin considers heavily when selecting a soft tissue filler. Because the face continues to age following procedures, temporary effects are preferred, especially in younger patients, so the face can be periodically reassessed and treated to accommodate the ongoing changes. Although there is no age beyond which patients no longer benefit from volume restoration with fillers, declining tissue quality and skin laxity are limiting factors that may require combination treatments with other modalities such as lasers or surgery. Older patients are more likely to require treatments with products that correct the results of more significant fat atrophy and replace volume, addressing the loss of the foundation and underlying structure of the face.

How is Restylane Administered?

Restylane treatment is administered in our office after a consultation with Dr. Levin to discuss your concerns and desired outcome. The injection portion of the appointment is completed in just a few minutes. Using a tiny needle or a micro cannula, we administer the filler into creases and facial folds to plump tissue and smooth the surface of the skin. Lip treatment involves a few injections into particular areas of the lips that need volume for better proportions.

Restylane Treatment Areas

Restylane® is a common hyaluronic acid dermal filler that can treat mild, moderate, and severe wrinkles and folds that occur with age. Restylane is a diverse product with numerous formulations, each designed to address different parts of the face and correct different problems.

The heavier formulations are used to treat cheeks, jawline, and temple areas. The finer, thinner forms are appropriate for the delicate area around the eyes, lips, and fine lines of the face. This filler works well in dynamic areas, such as those around the mouth, and therefore looks natural with facial expressions.

“I would highly recommend Dr. Flora Levin for cosmetic injections. I went in with multiple questions and not only did she listen very carefully, she was able to answer and consult with me about what would be the best option. Dr. Levin was very gentle and took her time to make sure I was comfortable and the injections were perfect. Of the many times I have received Botox injections this was my best experience yet!”

How long does Restylane last?

This depends on the area being treated. The more dynamic areas such as those around the mouth and lips may last 6-9 months. Whereas cheeks, eyelids, and other facial areas may last 12 months or more. Clinical studies have shown that 95% of patients treated with Restylane still saw results from their treatment after 12 months. Every person metabolizes soft tissue fillers differently, so the length of time may vary.

Is Restylane safe for pregnant women?

The effects of Restylane have not been tested on pregnant or breastfeeding women, so treatment is not conducted under these conditions.

How long does the Restylane treatment take?

Like other injectables, Restylane is referred to as a lunchtime treatment because an appointment may take just a few minutes to complete. First, we observe the treatment area to determine the amount and location where filler should be placed. If you request topical numbing cream, this will need to be left on the skin for 20 minutes before we commence with injections. The injection portion of treatment may take only 5 to 10 minutes and results are immediately noticeable.

Are there any side effects?

In some instances, bruising may occur after injectable treatment. Patients are advised not to take aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, or fish oil for a few days before their appointment, as these medications and supplements can increase the risk of bruising. If bruising does occur, it usually decreases gradually within 24 to 48 hours. The most common side effects of Restylane treatment include minor redness and swelling, usually localized around injection sites. These fade within hours of treatment. In some areas (lips and around the eyes) swelling may last 3-4 days. To expedite the recovery from injections, patients may apply ice to injection points.

Are there risks with Restylane

There are minor risks for common side effects such as bruising and swelling. Some degree of swelling is expected and usually resolves in 3-10 days. Serious side effects are very rare and may include allergic reaction, infection, inflammatory reaction, or intravascular injection. Early recognition and knowledge of how to treat a complication is paramount in avoiding long-term problems. fillers and other injectables should only be administered by a licensed provider who has been trained to use cosmetic products like Restylane.

How much does Restylane treatment cost?

The cost of Restylane can vary depending on the area(s) treated and individual patient goals . Dr. Levin often recommends that patients take a gradual approach, especially when addressing multiple areas of the face. This allows careful re-evaluation, gradual improvements and ensures that the patient is happy with their outcome. Having said that, one of the main benefits of HA fillers is nearly-instant gratification with immediate results.
